.
During the swearing-in
ceremony of President Obama in January 2009, 15
Republican policy makers were in a sombre mood as they gathered in a private
dining room at the Caucus Room in Washington, an upscale restaurant where
a New York strip steak costs $51. They were there at the invitation of Republican
strategist Frank Luntz, who organised the dinner and sent out the invitations. The
purpose of the secret meeting; to plot and scheme and craft the demise of
an Obama second term..
This secret meeting included right-wing journalist Fred Barnes. In addition to Luntz and Barnes, the other non-lawmaker present was former speaker and presidential candidate, Newt Gingrich, who had been forced to resign from Congress in disgrace. A detailed account of who was present at the dinner on that January 20 night and the plan they worked out to bring down Obama is provided by Robert Draper in 'Do Not Ask What Good We Do: Inside the US House of Representatives', which hit the bookshelves in April of 2012.
The dinner table was set at Luntz's request so everyone could see one another and talk freely. The session lasted four hours and by the end the sombre mood had lifted: they had conceived a plan. They would take back the House in November 2010, which they did, and use it as a spear to mortally wound Obama in 2011 and take back the Senate and White House in 2012, "We've gotta challenge them on every single bill and challenge them on every single campaign.", insisted Rep.Kevin McCarthy.)R-CA)
At the end of the meeting, Gingrich declared, “You will remember this day. You’ll remember this as the day the seeds of 2012 were sown.”
"The
single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be
a one-term president."
2010 quote from Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell:
The agreed upon plan was for the entire Republican electorate to unilaterally oppose, delay, and reject, everything proposed by the President, regardless of the consequences to the country they were elected to serve and the people they were elected to represent. Moderate Republicans who voiced their opposition to the plan were told in no uncertain terms that they would be targeted for removal by their own party, and replaced with radical, far-right conservatives, who would have no objection to embracing the newly devised hard line strategy.
"The New York Times has calculated that 78% of the more moderate half of the Republican caucus in the Senate in 2007 has left office, compared with just 39% of the conservatives. After the next election, the few that remain will be more fearful than ever of a primary challenge from the right. That is a recipe, as Mr Lugar put it, for “an unrelenting partisan mindset” marked by “reflexive votes for a rejectionist orthodoxy and rigid opposition to the actions and proposals of the other party”. The results will be frustrating not just for the tea party, but for everyone."
Republicans have opposed a lion's share of stimulus measures that once they supported, such as a payroll tax break, which they grudgingly embraced earlier in the year. Even unemployment insurance, a relatively uncontroversial tool for helping those in an economic downturn, has been consistently held up by Republicans or used as a bargaining chip for more tax cuts. Ten years ago, prominent conservatives were loudly making the case for fiscal stimulus to get the economy going; today, they treat such ideas like they're the plague. Republicans have also upbraided Ben Bernanke, head of the Federal Reserve, for even considering policies that focus on growing the economy and creating jobs. And then, there is the fact that since the original stimulus bill passed in February of 2009, Republicans have made practically no effort to draft comprehensive job creation legislation. Instead, they continue to pursue austerity policies, which reams of historical data suggest harms economic recovery and does little to create jobs. In fact, since taking control of the House of Representatives in 2011, Republicans have proposed hardly a single major jobs bill that didn't revolve, in some way, around their one-stop solution for all the nation's economic problems: more tax cuts for the wealthy. Republican austerity policies are not only harming America's present, but also imperilling its future.
Frank I. Luntz is an American political consultant, pollster, and Republican Party strategist. His most recent work has been with the Fox News Channel as a frequent commentator and analyst, as well as running focus groups after presidential debates. Frank Luntz specializes in Propaganda. An avid student of the propaganda tactics of the Third Reich's Joseph Goebbels, Luntz is skilled in the politics of division. Like Goebbels, he advocated the deliberate spread of hate, lies and fear, in order to gain control.
"I focus on words that cause people to change their minds, change their behavior even change their attitudes." ~Frank Luntz 3/20/11 in interview with Matt Lauer
In the post World War II era, word-crafting, or political double-speak, as we know it, was made famous by the prescient author George Orwell's book "1984", and his descriptions on political speech from his essays Politics and the English Language. Although there is no mention of Doublespeak in Nineteen Eighty-Four, it has been argued that the term is a combination of two concepts - Doublethink and Newspeak, which are original to his work. Orwell wrote, "unscrupulous politicians, advertisers, religionists, and other doublespeakers of whatever stripe continue to abuse language for manipulative purposes".
Minister of Propaganda Goebbels wrote: “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” “It would not be impossible to prove with sufficient repetition and a psychological understanding of the people concerned that a square is in fact a circle. They are mere words, and words can be molded until they clothe ideas and disguise.”
GOP strategist Frank Luntz agreed with Goebbels philosophy and opined that the vast majority of Americans, in particular the less educated, who are politely termed "Under-Informed Voters" could easily be persuaded to accept what Republicans would put forth as their "New Reality". A certain segment of the masses could also be convinced, for example, that legislation specifically implemented to benefit them or to benefit their planet, was instead being forced upon them in order to do them harm and restrict their freedom.
Media coverage of an issue can play a particularly mportant part in shaping political reality. The Fox "News" channel, for example, is primarily a right wing propaganda medium, employed to reinforce the GOP's political strategem.
Doublespeak is language that deliberately disguises, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words. Doublespeak may take the form of euphemisms (e.g., "downsizing" for layoffs, "servicing the target" for bombing, making the truth less unpleasant, without denying its nature. It may also be deployed as intentional ambiguity, or reversal of meaning (for example, naming a state of war "peace"). In such cases, doublespeak disguises the nature of the truth, producing a communication bypass.
Luntz's plan was to use words that were basically the opposite of factual descriptions.
These are
a few of his recommendations:
Dont say oil drilling. Say energy independence.
Dont say inheritance tax. Say death tax.
Don't say "Capitalism." Say "Economic Freedom."
Don't say that the government 'taxes the rich.' Say Government "takes from the rich."
Don't admit Lobbyists are Collective Bargainers for Corporations. Say "Union Collective Bargaining steals your tax dollars."
Dont say healthcare reform. Say government takeover.
Don't say "Public workers." Call them "Government workers."
Don't tell Occupy Wall Street "you don't give a shit." Say "I get it."
Don't tell struggling Americans "you're on your own." Say "I get it."
Don't tell Occupy Wall Street "you should protest Wall Street." Say "You should occupy the White House."

Club for Growth Action is the 8th largest giver to political campaigns. The purpose of this mega-billionaire funded shadow group is to elect legislators who can convince "low-information voters" that the “economy is too fragile” to raise taxes on the rich. The Club is primarily a conduit for its bigger givers to give to “outside” organizations via the Club’s 527, then funnel the money directly to aid candidates, either with attack ads, or with supportive position ads, that could not be donated due to the limits in individual giving directly to a candidate. Notable "members" include John W. Childs, one of the wealthiest Bostonians, managing billions for Insurance companies, Jackson T. Stephens of Little Rock, Arkansas, is the CEO of a wholesale drugs and sundries company, Mr. Richard E. Uihlein, the Co-Founder and CEO of the packaging materials giant, Ronald M. The stated purpose of this PAC is to "empower the leaderless, decentralized community of the tea party movement as it continues its hostile takeover of the GOP establishment." Activities of FreedomWorks for America include lobbying for removal of CEO's whose business practices are considered "green friendly" and environmentally sound. FreedomWorks endorsed 114 candidates for federal office in 2010, of whom seventy won election. | $5,385,201 |
