The snake, a fashionable jewelry motif dating all the way back to the Macedonian and Ptolemaic period (332–30 B.C.) after Egypt came under the rule of the Hellenistic Greeks (323–27 B.C.) and later became a province of the Roman Empire (after 27 B.C.). In this region, the snake was associated with the cult of Isis. The Egyptian goddess Isis was worshiped as the ideal mother and wife, as well as the matron of nature and magic. She listened to the prayers of the wealthy, maidens, aristocrats, and rulers. She was also considered to be the friend of slaves, sinners, artisans, and the downtrodden. Isis is the goddess of motherhood, magic and fertility.

In modern times this style came into fashion again during the Victorian Period. Snake bracelets again enjoyed a resurgence in popularity during the free-wheeling 1920's when fashion leaders of the day were observed wearing them on the upper arm instead of the wrist.
