FINE CUSTOM AND DESIGNER PINS

PIN: ESTATE ROSE CUT DIAMOND BROOCH 10.60ct.
ANTIQUE, SOLID GOLD, HUGE, FASCINATING

Antique, Georgian - Solid Gold - Rose Cut Diamond Brooch - 10.60 carats

This is an important mid to late Georgian or early Victorian solid gold and diamond brooch. From an estate on the Treasure Coast of Florida, this huge, and breathtakingly beautiful rose cut diamond brooch measures 62mm x 35mm. The design, a lavish floral spray of hand cut diamonds, is estimated by our bench jeweler, (a custom Designer, Platinumsmith, and Goldsmith with 35 years of experience), to contain approximately 10.60 carats. Weighing in at 19.30 dwt, (just under an ounce) this solid yellow gold brooch has been carefully tested, and gold purity is guaranteed to be 14k or higher. The exquisite piece, part of a larger, breathtakingly beautiful collection of fine jewelry from the same estate that we'll be listing shortly, came to us from one of the heirs of a prominant U.S. Diplomat and his wife who, over the life of his career, (Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson administrations) had been stationed in Rome, Baghdad, Ankara, etc. The antique brooch offered here was originally purchased from a well respected estate jeweler in Ankara, Turkey during the mid twentieth century. At time of purchase the buyer was advised that the provenance of this stunning antique brooch was Russian. We believe the piece may be of Imperial Russia manufacture and origin - possibly St. Petersburg. The piece is unmarked, and typical for the era, the diamonds are foil backed. The reverse of the brooch is solid gold with a closed back, the central flower with gently curling gold tendrils resembles an antique climbing rose, and the leaves as well as the rose petals are richly paved with rose cut diamonds of varying sizes. For visualization purposes, we are also displaying this exquisite brooch in alternative vignettes to show how it would look if worn as a slide, on a wide, omega style necklace, and if it were worn as a clasp for a double or triple strand of pearls of varying colors, demonstrating the option of laser soldering either (or both) a hidden bail or concealed box clasp to the underside of the brooch, thereby gracefully expanding its versatility. PIN / PENDANT:
Phenomenally beautiful, this piece also comes to us with an interesting history. We would like to have obtained additional background but the individual who provided the history to us passed away suddenly, so we'll simply give you what information we do have. We were told that the center stone, which tests as sapphire, originally belonged to one of the world's most prominant coffee barons*, who traveled all over the world during the 1800's and purchased this stone during his travels. The richly unique blue-green color, also known as "teal", is considered a relatively rare color in sapphires. Our own research tells us that some of the finest specimens have been found in Burma (Myanmar). The coffee baron had this hauntingly beautiful stone set in an elegant and quite expensive gentleman's ring. After his death the sapphire was removed from his ring and incorporated into a piece of jewelry intended to be worn by a beautiful woman. It was reset in the most exquisitely enameled 14k and diamond pin, and a small hidden bail was added so that it might also be worn as a pendant. We find a very finely hand-engraved personalized inscription on the reverse, with a woman's name and a date, giving the year as 1911. The inscription may be buffed out and the pin clasp can be removed if preferred. For our own part, we rather liked the historical reference, and of course, choosing to retain the (hallmarked**) pin clasp is simply a matter of personal preference. The piece is in absolutely superb condition. We have added a chain, since the original chain was missing when this was placed with us for sale. The sapphire weighs 5.88 carats, and the diameter is approximately 11mm. It is an excellent cut. Clarity is IF to VVS1. The center stone is surrounded by approximately .75 carats of VS clarity, top white, F-G color, prong set diamonds. The diamonds are themselves surrounded by a 14k circle of finely executed teal blue Guilloché enamel . This is a truly unique and magnificent piece of jewelry. Price: $5800. SOLD

*"Coffee Barons": The small group of men who made Post, Maxwell House, Hills Brothers, A& P and several now forgotten but once powerful brands household names--made coffee the "second most valuable legal traded commodity on earth, second only to oil." - A quote from the book, "Uncommon Grounds, The History of Coffee and How It Transformed Our World" by Mark Pendergrast

**Carter, Gough & Company (1841-1922) were makers of superior gold and platinum jewelry and they were particularly well known for their superb Guilloché enamel work. Guilloché, phonetically pronounced gee-oh-SHAY, comes from the French and means "engine-turning." The process of Guilloché refers to engraved decoration of geometric design (achieved by engine turning),and it is usually used as a base for translucent enamel) The hallmarking on this piece appears on the pin clasp. It is marked "14k" with letter "C" sideways in a spade shape. The Carter, Gough & Company hallmark. is shown on the photo collage enlargement.
