DIAMONDS

PENDANT/BROOCH/PIN COMBINATION:
ESTATE: LAVISH, VERY FINE PLATINUM Edwardian / Art Nouveau DIAMOND PENDANT EXQUISITE PIN / PENDANT / BROOCH.

This PLATINUM, OPAL & DIAMOND BROOCH / PENDANT displays breathtaking beauty. From an estate on the Treasure Coast of Florida, this is a stunning PLATINUM, DIAMOND and OPAL pendant to which a sturdy 14k white gold pin was later attached to permit alternate wear as a brooch. The diamonds are OLD MINE CUT, the four main diamonds are both prong set and bezel set. They have VS2 - SI1 clarity with G-H color . Measured as set (between 4.0 and 4.33mm) the four main diamonds have an estimated weight of approx. 1 carat, and are in turn surrounded by an additional .69 carats in diamond melee (smaller, prong set, single cut diamonds) for a combined total diamond weight of approx. 1.69 carats. The focal point of the piece is a fine Australian Opal cabachon, oval in shape, measuring 7 x 9mm, and estimated to weigh approximately 1 carat. The overall measurement of the pin / pendant is 35mm x 32mm and the total weight is 4.85 DWT = 0.2425 Ounces = 7.54175 Grams. The size and configuration of this exquisite piece offer a wealth of additional uses, including, but not limited to, an exquisite antique pearl clasp or a magnificent cuff bracelet, as shown (for inspiration) in the examples below which have been paired with other items in our Estate Jewelry collection. Item#c-eg8a SOLD Price $2975.

PIN / PENDANT:
Phenomenally beautiful, this piece also comes to us with an interesting history. We would like to have obtained additional background but the individual who provided the history to us passed away suddenly, so we'll simply give you what information we do have. We were told that the center stone, which tests as sapphire, originally belonged to one of the world's most prominant coffee barons*, who traveled all over the world during the 1800's and purchased this stone during his travels. The richly unique blue-green color, also known as "teal", is considered a relatively rare color in sapphires. Our own research tells us that some of the finest specimens have been found in Burma (Myanmar). The coffee baron had this hauntingly beautiful stone set in an elegant and quite expensive gentleman's ring. After his death the sapphire was removed from his ring and incorporated into a piece of jewelry intended to be worn by a beautiful woman. It was reset in the most exquisitely enameled 14k and diamond pin, and a small hidden bail was added so that it might also be worn as a pendant. We find a very finely hand-engraved personalized inscription on the reverse, with a woman's name and a date, giving the year as 1911. The inscription may be buffed out and the pin clasp can be removed if preferred. For our own part, we rather liked the historical reference, and of course, choosing to retain the (hallmarked**) pin clasp is simply a matter of personal preference. The piece is in absolutely superb condition. We have added a chain, since the original chain was missing when this was placed with us for sale. The sapphire weighs 5.88 carats, and the diameter is approximately 11mm. It is an excellent cut. Clarity is IF to VVS1. The center stone is surrounded by approximately .75 carats of VS clarity, top white, F-G color, prong set diamonds. The diamonds are themselves surrounded by a 14k circle of finely executed teal blue Guilloché enamel . This is a truly unique and magnificent piece of jewelry. SOLD

*"Coffee Barons": The small group of men who made Post, Maxwell House, Hills Brothers, A& P and several now forgotten but once powerful brands household names--made coffee the "second most valuable legal traded commodity on earth, second only to oil." - A quote from the book, "Uncommon Grounds, The History of Coffee and How It Transformed Our World" by Mark Pendergrast

**Carter, Gough & Company (1841-1922) were makers of superior gold and platinum jewelry and they were particularly well known for their superb Guilloché enamel work. Guilloché, phonetically pronounced gee-oh-SHAY, comes from the French and means "engine-turning." The process of Guilloché refers to engraved decoration of geometric design (achieved by engine turning),and it is usually used as a base for translucent enamel) The hallmarking on this piece appears on the pin clasp. It is marked "14k" with letter "C" sideways in a spade shape. The Carter, Gough & Company hallmark. is shown on the photo collage enlargement.
